Charles Bridge

with one comment

I was the one in charge of planning the itinerary for Prague and 2 attractions that I was most looking forward to was Charles Bridge and Prague Castle.

Charles Bridge is a stone Gothic bridge that connects the Old Town and Malá Strana. It was actually called the Stone Bridge (Kamenný most) during the first several centuries. Its construction was commissioned by Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV and began in 1357. In charge of the construction was architect Petr Parléř whose other works include the  St.  Vitus Cathedral  at  the Prague Castle. It is said that egg yolks were mixed into the mortar to strengthen the construction of the bridge. (http://www.myczechrepublic.com/prague/sightseeing/charles_bridge.html)

At least it was egg yolks and not skulls! o.o

There were ‘guards’ at the beginning of the bridge and I thought it would be cool to take a photo with them but turns out we have to pay! 😦 I thought it was not worth it, because I feel like I’ve been ripped a million times since I stepped into Prague.

There was an insane number of people on the bridge till it felt like there was some kind of festival going on. It was quite fun strolling along, taking photos, looking at the makeshift stalls, and just breathing in the river scent.

We were just chilling by the side and taking a lot of photos (typical Asians ;)) and a Prague artist asked LC for a photo haha!

and as usual, we had much fun with the sun and I borrowed YY’s raybans. makes me want to go them too! he said to get it in Japan, as it would be definitely be cheaper than SG, and US as well. ahhh Tokyo, how I’ve missed you so.

The metal arch(?) above, I think is for lovers to put their locks and maybe for singles to pray to meet their right ones soon. but we were all slightly skeptical about it because we don’t know how the ‘rules’ are like over in Prague’s spiritual world :p

Finally, the end of the bridge. a maximum ten minutes walk turned into one that took more than an hour hehe…

Over to lesser town, to explore and have a cup of coffee.

and the walk back to Old Town after the sun set.

At night, I can see why Charles Bridge is described as gothic, the many statues with the yellow lights and the river which had turned a sinister black does makes one shiver.

some items that caught my eye. I will be going to choose my gown for the bridal photoshoot later, but I’m not excited at all because I am afraid that I will not see anything that catches my eye. Let’s pray that it doesn’t happen and I will be a fairy even in the simplest dress.

Welcome to Praha!

with 2 comments

After England, we were due to spend the next 4 days in Prague. I heard so many things about Prague that I had high expectations. Honestly, till now I still can’t decide if it met my expectations or not. I loved and hated that city.

I love the uneven roads, the winding streets, Charles Bridge, Prague Castle but I hate how touristy the whole place has become! 😦 Still, I guess the sights seen were worth the jostling at Charles Bridge, Old town, St Vitus etc.

We stayed at Hostel Bridge which is located in Old town just 2 mins walk away from Charles Bridge. The location was wonderful but it was definitely not hotel material. More like a home, an old home. At least it was safe and clean. Sigh. I yearned for the day when I can stay in 5-star hotels wherever I go :p

Settled for lunch at one of the tourist places and were ripped off, but we were all hungry and lazy to walk any further. Friends had warned that it would be better to stick to normal Western food, but what’s the point of being here and not trying local food?!

Definitely unusual, and not my type of food. I would love to dismiss it, but I know that tastes are acquired and one man’s meat is another’s poison.

After, we headed to the famed Astronomical Clock and roamed about Old Town for a bit.

The Astronomical Dial shows the medieval perception of the Universe: the Earth is the center. The blue part of the dial represents the sky above the horizon, the brown part the sky below it. There are Latin words ORTVS (east) and OCCASVS (west) written above the horizon, andAVRORA (dawn) and CPEPVSCVLVM (twilight) below. There is a Zodiac ring, which represents the stars in the sky and it moves according to it. The two clock hands bear the signs of the Sun and the Moon.
There are three circles on the dial, showing different time: the outer circle with Schwabacher numerals shows the Old Czech Time (“Italian Time”), the circle with Roman numbers shows the Central European Time and the inner circle with Arabic numerals shows the “Babylonian Time”: the length of an hour differs there according to the season – it is longer in the summer, shorter in the winter. The Prague Astronomical Clock is the only one in the world able to measure it. Furthermore, the little star by the zodiac ring shows the sidereal time.

The guns were part of an art gallery and it made shooting sounds whenever someone passes it. Totally cool!

And Charles Bridge to end our day.

I took many photos, plus it’s so beautiful I think it deserves a post on its own so stay tuned! 😉

what i’ve been wearing…(2)

with 3 comments

1) top from Uniqlo, pants from H&M

I love this tee! It’s so comfy and cute. I also did my eye shadow a little different from usual, but it didn’t show up on photos as well as I hope it would.

2) top from Uniqlo, skirt from H&M, necklace from f21

3) dress from ASOS

4) top from Shenzhen, shorts from Vero Moda, bag from HVV

My belt is actually a long necklace! I underestimated the top, it was way too long and covering my shorts. Gonna pair it with tights the next time or 3/4 pants. Oh and I did my hair a little differently, that’s why there’s a little poof heh 😉

I need a hair cut!

the classics

Is there something wrong with the WordPress app on iPhone? I tried updating but keep getting hit with some stupid error zzz.

Anyway, I’m excited about my book haul from KL! 😀 Why don’t secondary schools make it mandatory for us to read these during Literature? Class would be much more interesting instead of us making poems about the teacher’s polka dot underwear 😡

I am starting with Wuthering Heights 😉 Let me know if you have any classics that you love to death. I have a lot of time on hand now lolol…

ok, ending with 2 cute photos of me! technically, one photo and 1 GIF. ta!

last 3 days in England…

leave a comment »

Finally we reached Manchester, the reason why we planned a trip to Europe. I didn’t take many photos at all, because it was not outstanding. To me, it was just another city.

Still, I was glad that I managed to visit the school. And the graduation hall, although I probably wouldn’t have enough money to return in July for the graduation ceremony ;(

After lunch with some of our lecturers, we headed to Old Trafford because Licheng is a ManU fan! I tagged along even though I am not a ManU fan because what is coming to England without going to any of its stadiums?

That was 2 days in Manchester, and then it’s back to London for another night before finally heading out of England to start the rest of our trip. Blogging about this first week makes me feel like I have only been to England! =p

From Manchester to London would be a 3 hours drive hence we decided to find a place mid-way to stop and explore a little more. Final destination we have chosen is Warwick Castle 😉

I am a sneaky spy LOL.

We climbed up the steep stairs to the highest point and it felt great. If only the land is mine, hiak hiak >.<

And there was a special exhibition, or just an event? showcasing how royalty used to have their weekends and scandals. I love that there were recorded conversations in victorian english about those secret conversations.

and this last photo, a personal favorite of mine. look at his gaze! #killerstare

going off to KL for a short getaway. hope the Watsons sales there are as crazy as Singapore’s! I’ve already bought some masks and intending to buy more heh…
