Top 12 Beauty Products in 2012

with one comment

Didn’t mean to be that dramatic about it, but as I was reading other people’s year-end posts, I got a little emotional and did some self-reflection as well. I started a new job in 2013, travelled less, got married to the most amazing man ever, and started going to church regularly.

These are the main highlights and I am not going to dwell on that because this post is about b-e-a-u-t-y!

I thought it will be fun to share what my top twelve beauty products in 2012 and my thoughts about them. Basically a lot of ‘omg I really love this!’ :p

I also tried not to ramble on too much, though 12 products will still be a lengthy read no matter what. Hope you enjoy reading! ^^

*Products listed in no particular order of preference*

1) Bioderma – Sensibio H2O/ Sebium H2O

This has been amazing! I have heard of Bioderma being amazing and all on Youtube, but I don’t know why I didn’t pick it up when I was in Paris last year. It was only when it became widely available in Guardian that I decided to give it a try.

I have high expectations for it and it didn’t disappoint! Removes my makeup fantastically and doesn’t leave any residue on my skin, both Sensibio and Sebium worked well for me. Best makeup remover ever, works well on both eyes and face but I prefer to use a separate remover for the eyes (not sure why, just a weird preference). I will definitely keep repurchasing but also try out different removers at the same time since I go through them so quickly!

People have complained about the price but honestly, it is on 20% discount so often! After discount, it is $23.90 which I feel is reasonable for 250mL. Especially when comparing to Bifesta, another popular brand of water-based makeup remover.

And, I prefer Bioderma! 🙂

2) Dollywink – Liquid Eyeliner

I bought this as I was rather curious about Dollywink’s products. I love it so much because it is very easy to use and doesn’t smudge. It also does not hurt my eyes while drawing, as some liners somehow can due to their brush being too hard. Removing it is also a breeze, no flaking and all. Just swipe and it’s gone.

Also, the thing is, up till this point, my preference has always been gel liner. So imagine how good it must be for me to use this everyday now. Or maybe my habits just changed haha

These days, I am really preferring using a pencil liner to line my upper lash line first then using liquid liner really close to the lash line to get a soft yet intense look.

3) Dollywink – Eyelash Glue

I am someone who uses falsies everyday because my eyes are too small and mascara don’t do shit to my lashes. After enduring Ardell’s lashglue (it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t exactly great either) for ages, I decided to try different brands.

It took me a really long time to locate Dollywink’s eyelash glue. In between that period of time I was trying out other glues which didn’t manage to impress me. So imagine how happy I was to finally find it! And even more exhilarating to find that it works amazing-balls!

Like seriously. Here’s why – 1) brush is easy to work with, 2) glue stays on ALL DAY, 3) the amount of glue needed is minimal, therefore I am able to re-use my lashes more.

And the packaging is so cute! Major plus point.

4) Benefit – Box Blush in Hervana

I am so glad that I picked this up! It is really a very pretty pink and goes with anything. If I can only take one blush along for a holiday, this will definitely be my choice especially if I will be away for long and want to do a variety of looks.

It smells very nice too, and I have enjoyed using the brush that came along with the blush. Their quality of brushes included in their blushes have improved so much, thank God. It used to be so scratchy *rolls eyes*

Something that doesn’t sit right with me is that they reduced the quantity from 0.35oz to 0.15oz. Like huh? It’s not like I can finish one whole blush since I have so many others but surely they can reduce a little on the price? >.<

5) Benefit’s Watt’s Up

Ordered this on a whim during my last Benefit haul and I didn’t expect to love it so much ❤

Lights up my face very naturally when the sun hits, even my friends could see the difference! Very subtle and pretty.

How I apply the product is to swipe some product on the back of my hand like my swatch and then pick up some of that with my finger tips to dab on my cheekbones.

Favorite highlighter now!

6) Dior Lipstick in Shade 368

I got this sometime last year on a flight in a set of 5 (post here). It surprises me by being moisturizing enough to be applied on the lips without a lipbalm under, and this shade is the perfect pink for me. I have it in my makeup bag along with my lipstick of the day, because it is my fail-proof shade no matter what makeup I have on that day.

Dior lip products never fail to amaze me (love their glosses too!), if only they are not so expensive x_x

7) Rimmel London Kate Matte Lipstick

Got these from ASOS after seeing Haru’s post on them, and I am really surprised by how much I love them! It applies smoothly, stays on well, and the colors are brillant! It also does not dry my lips out, as some matte lipsticks tend to do. One thing to note is that it does have a strong candy smell to it, so for people who cannot stand fragranced products may want to take note of this. I am usually quite sensitive to scents but this was still alright for me as it is a sweet scent, and I love the formula too much to fault Rimmel on this haha.

from left to right: 107, 110, 111

The 3 colors I got are all variations of reds and I am enjoying them especially for this time of the year. Very tempted to get all the shades to complete my collection >.<

My favorite is 111, Kiss of Life!

8) The Face Shop Face It HD Perfect BB Cream

Best BB cream I have tried this year, and I love it so much that I am including it in my top ten!

I am a face product junkie, last August when I went Seoul, I bought a lot of BB creams back and still haven’t managed to get through the stash *sweats*

Anyway, I love BB creams because they usually include a lot of benefits like whitening, anti-aging, spf, etc. This one really impressed me because it covers up pores really well and gives me a flawless finish. When applied, it appears lighter than my natural skin color but by the time I get to the office, it will have adapt to my skin color. I have no issues with that since I drive to work anyway so no one will be noticing the different colors hahaha.

It has a thick consistency, since it promises full coverage, but I prefer a medium coverage so I will mix it with a bb cream that has light consistency (I use Maybelline’s Dream Fresh 8-in-1). This makes it easier for me to blend too!

Oil control is so-so but it may be because I don’t have the habit to use a primer and a setting powder heh

9) Skinfood Argan Oil

This past year has been a craze of argan and macadamia oil on Youtube! (have not been sucked into it though, phew)

Personally I am not a hair person so I have not paid much attention to taking care. But for the past 2 years I have been going to the same salon and starting to take care of my hair after much nagging from my stylist. I bought quite a few hair treatment oils to try out and I have really been satisfied with this!

Smells really good and detangles my hair very quickly. This is a new bottle as I lost my previous one, I suspect my mom kidnapped it because she loves it too! Highly recommend everyone to try it out 🙂

10) Coco Chanel – Chance EDT

I am a perfume person, have I mentioned this before? I used to be really crazy but I have been cutting down. After moving to my new house, I only brought along the perfumes that I enjoyed the most (perfume collection soon maybe!).

This is actually a Valentine’s Day gift from T, because he loves the scent! Surprisingly, I have never tried it before but over time I have really grown to love this. It is my number one scent now, replacing Armani’s Blue Code which I still love but Chance is just more suitable for my style now.

11) Etude House – Apricot Sticks

These babies I picked up in Korea last year randomly because I thought they were cute. Super moisturizing and tinted as well. I feel like these are the asian versions of Revlon’s Lip Butters, just that these Apricot Sticks are not as sticky.

Usually use them when I am lazy and want a pop of color, especially on Sundays when all I have on is tinted moisturizer and blush.

12) Skinfood – Sugar Bloom Shadow Box #3

This I also picked up in Korea!

I think it’s pretty obvious from my picture that I have been using the shade on the left the most.

It is a beautiful neutral that is so easy to apply and works well on its own. There was a period of time when I used just this eyeshadow for days and days. But now I tried to spread my love around my other shadows too. I was actually eyeing another trio and now regretting not picking that up as well. Maybe next time?

And this marks the end of my 12 products! If you have made it to the end, well done and I hope you got some good recommendations on what to try out for the New Year. Do leave a comment if you did a blog post of such, or if you have any mind-blowing beauty discoveries you made in 2012. Please share!

You know, I keep thinking that my Korea trip last August was pretty blah. BUT after writing my reviews and realizing how many treasures I have uncovered, I am tempted to go there again! SHOULD I? Probably 😉

Happy New Year Everyone! xx

The ‘Use-it-up’ Project (14) – December Edition

leave a comment »

Hello everyone, how’s your Christmas celebrations? I stayed at home the whole day, except for heading out to dinner. Did loads of laundry because we washed the bedsheets and whatnot. Feels good to dedicate a day at home cleaning up instead of heading out and spend money! Am I getting boring already? =o

Let’s get started on this month’s empties.

This month I am throwing out 7 products. Pretty good huh? I also packed away some makeup that I don’t use as often to my sister. Been clearing out quite frequently, but a little at a time so I don’t feel the pinch. I hope that in future, every item that I own are items that I love dearly and works awesome for me! Although that seems a little impossible since I love trying out new products :p

1) Shiseido – Perfect Whip Cleansing Foam

why did I buy it? Read good things about it in forum so decided to pick it up during one of my Tokyo trips last year?

first impressions? cleanses really well! A little too drying for my skin though. Just a tiny bit of product is good enough for the entire face.

upon finishing? It lasted me a really long time because I only need very little product each time and I only cleanse my face at night. I actually grew to really like the product but I am currently trying out other cleansers right now, although I certainly can foresee myself picking this up again in the future!

2) TheBodyShop – Neroli Jasmin Shower Gel

why did I buy it? I picked it up during one of their sales for $12 I believe.

Finished this before in September. Read all about it here!

3) Bath&Body Works – True Blue Spa, Grin & Bear It Body Lotion

why did I buy it? this was provided in a toiletries set when I was traveling in LA this recent Oct.

first impressions? I am featuring it only because I LOVE IT SO MUCH! The scent is a-m-a-z-i-n-g! It is not something I will pick it up myself but I really fell in love with it so much that I brought the lotion back to Singapore to finish it hahaha.

upon finishing? Described as having aloe and real orange peel extract, this is truly spa in a bottle and I will most definitely pick this up when I go to the States again. Or maybe in my future Bath&Body Works orders 😉

4) Burt’s Bees – Radiance Eye Creme with royal jelly

why did I buy it? I was running out of eye cream and Jenny from sushi-cat raved about it here.

first impressions? I liked how moisturizing it was on the lids but didn’t really notice any other effects.

upon finishing? This ended up being a little too moisturizing for my eye area and I developed a milia seed (which disappeared quickly, phew). BUT I have to say that maybe it’s my problem, because once I applied less product, it worked fine. Just that it isn’t any miracle product for my eyes.

5) Clinique – Bottom Lash Mascara in Black

why did I buy it? Because it is so cute! I am a sucker for anything gimmicky unfortunately, le sigh. Trying to change!

first impressions? oooh this is fun and really easy to apply. A little extra to make my eyes bigger, always welcome.

upon finishing? It was fun while it last……..I honestly don’t apply mascara to my lashes most days as I am usually in a rush so this kind of went to waste =/ Oh well!

6) Bareminerals – Waterproof Eyeliner in 5pm

why did I buy it? Part of a set I got last year. Read about it here!

first impressions? applies smoothly and lasts really well too. I have never been so wow-ed by a pencil liner.

upon finishing? I didn’t manage to finish it because I just can’t seem to sharpen it further. Which was very irritating. While I really like the color and formula, I have to sharpen so frequently (because it is really soft) and the stick just seems to decrease so quickly. I was also using it daily because it is so easy to use but I don’t think I will repurchase it as I can’t justify the money spent. Any recommendations for creamy eyeliners are welcome! I am currently trying out Urban Decay 😉

7) Jemma Kidd – Cheek ID Color Adapt Blush

why did I buy it? Another gimmicky product that has managed to persuade me to part with my dollars >.<

first impressions? Gives a natural glow but I can’t apply any powder to set it because it is too sticky.

upon finishing? As you can see, I still have plenty of product left but I can’t bring myself to finish it or pass it to other people because it really sucks as a product. Way too sticky and I can feel something on my cheeks after applying and blending it out -_- I had honestly expected better quality from Jemma Kidd since she is a makeup artist right? Still keen on trying out other products but I will do more research before purchasing anything from her line again!

And that’s all for this year! On to try and finish more products now :p

My life in Instagram (1)

with 2 comments

I really do not like leaving the blog untouched for too long so here I am posting a few photos. Yes I finally got on instagram! add me @ ashlynechen 🙂

By the way how’s everyone preparing for Christmas? I just bought my Christmas cards yesterday, can you believe it?!

1) simple salmon I did one night when T was not around. super yummy and easy!

2) got these Cath Kidston lip balms from ASOS. Love the scents!

3) My first Vanitytrove. Courtesy of Allerine as I won a hamper from them. Check them out, I have really been enjoying their teas ^^

4) my new keychain ❤

5) macaroons that Vivian bought for us one LG night. sinful much.

6) this is my latte just last Sunday, at The Fabulous Baker Boys. by the way, I find them too expensive. $8 for a slice of cake and $16 for a beef pie? *frowns* it’s not even a proper restaurant, just a cafe hmm.

7) my bath&body works hand sanitizers. MAJOR LOVE ❤  for those wondering, I shipped it over via vPost and got a few candles as well during their Black Friday sale.

8) Paris Baguette – Strawberry shortcake. A little treat to perk myself up this rainy morning.

9) and leaving my favorite photo for last – my pretty full length mirror. Didn’t have space for a Christmas tree so I suppose this has to work. I am really looking forward to moving in 3-5 years time and having a real Christmas tree 😀

Have a Merry Christmas everyone! xx

My favorite things in Vegas

leave a comment »

After Grand Canyon, we headed back to Vegas and stayed there for 3 nights.

The first night we ended up at Wynn’s for its famous buffet 😀

IMG_2095 IMG_2093

As we were tired from spending the day at Grand Canyon, we left exploring the Strip’s nightlife to the next night.

The first hotel that we hit  the next day was Venetian. My favorite, since it’s really beautiful! I love how all hotels are so extravagant and try to transport you to another place. I guess, that’s why it’s easy to lose touch with reality in Vegas =o

P1040885 P1040879

Loving my drop waist dress from ASOS.

We headed to Caesars Palace next.

Spot the spiral escalator in the bottom right photo! T really loves it, and was telling me how unique the design was and all. To me, as long as it gets me up/down, I don’t really care if it’s straight or spiral lol.

P1040908 P1040911

We also did a little gambling at their jackpot machines and I won a little while before losing everything again. Don’t gamble people!

IMG_2104 IMG_2106

Headed over to New York New York for Zumanity, which is an adult show because come on, we are in Vegas! But, ahhh boring for us. Actually not very interested in the acts and actually found some of them rather revolting. I am a very traditional person *ahem*

But, check out the lady’s eyelashes below!

Got out on the Strip to catch a few free shows at various hotels.

The one at Treasure Island was quite nice 🙂

It was also pretty fun looking at drunk people on the streets making a fool out of themselves 😉 I was especially amused by a guy who kept trying to pick up girls with super cheesy lines like ‘Hey that’s me calling you’ when a random girl’s hp rang.

The next day was also my birthday, October 9!

Since one of my favorite hobbies is shopping, T planned for us to spend a whole day at the Las Vegas Premium Outlets. I prefer the South Wing to the North, which was essentially a mall without the outlet feel.

IMG_2119 IMG_2156

Me in my birthday dress, and T grinning widely after getting his dream bags at Tumi.

He then brought me to the Effiel Tower Restaurant for my birthday dinner. It was a surprise as I thought we would just randomly picked some place, but his boss actually recommended him to bring me here.

We had an excellent view of Bellagio Fountains ❤

And that marks the end of my wonderful stay in Vegas and a memorable 24 birthday.

what I’ve been wearing…(17)

with 5 comments

I thought it would be good to quickly post these 2 outfits. Also, because I have been diligent at taking photos, but not so when it comes to posting them.

Today, the usual. Posting 2 outfits with the same skirt, I like to do this. It challenges me to think of different ways of styling the same item. Of course, Pinterest helps a lot when I am out of creativity.

This skirt I got it from Seoul when I went last August. I love it because it is super comfortable and made of thick material! I also bought 2, because I thought I will be setting up an online shop. Now, that is not going to happen so I am looking to let go of this bangage striped skirt (brand new) at $20. Email me at if interested! 🙂

IMG_2526 IMG_2527

1) Black top from Love, Bonito, Cardigan from H&M, skirt from Korea, bag from Kate Spade, belt from BKK

2) Pullover from Primark, skirt from Korea, bag from Kate Spade, Necklace from Tiffany&Co

So, I am feeling the stress of year end! Not so much of buying christmas gifts for everyone since there isn’t such a tradition in Singapore, but more of the errand-running. I just feel like I should try to complete everything in 2012, pay taxes, send car for servicing, renew insurance, choose my wedding photos (!! can you believe that I have procrastinated for nearly 5 months? =/) and etc. Goodness, I hope everyone is handling their stuff better than I am.

Thanks for reading! xx

The ‘Use-it-up’ Project (13) – November Edition

with 5 comments

Oh man! I am late this month again :p

How have your first 3 days of December been? I am really into the holiday mood, putting up christmas lights in the house and being really happy. Seriously love this time of the year!

So this month, I feel like I have used up a variety of products and am really proud of myself because some of these products like the foundation and exfoliator, I have the littlest amount in them for the longest time ever but I just can’t seem to finish it.

1) Evian – Facial Spray

why did I buy it? I love having facial sprays near me to hydrate my skin.

first impressions? just a regular facial spray.

upon finishing? Now that I have branched out and tried other brands of facial sprays, I definitely prefer La Roche Posay simply because it dispenses a finer mist.

2) Essential – Ultra Honey & Shea Butter

why did I buy it? I was just starting to try out hair masks and this is the first one I got due to its cute packaging! Plus it promises light and bouncy hair.

first impressions? It didn’t give me the light and bouncy hair I was hoping for 😦

upon finishing? I was disappointed with this product. First, it didn’t give me volume. Secondly, I felt that it was too thick. It just didn’t do much for my hair but I gritted my teeth and finished it. Maybe my hair is just too dry for any hair masks to save it.

3) The Body Shop – Tea Tree Oil Facial Exfoliator

why did I buy it? heard about tea tree oil supposedly being able to prevent blemishes so I thought I could give this a try.

first impressions? It is not too harsh on the skin, and the smell is not overwhelming (at least for me). It does leaves my face feeling smoother after using it.

upon finishing? I took a really long time to finish this, close to 2 years? Somehow, I used it for a while, got distracted and used other products, come back to this when I need a gentle exfoliator or when I feel like my skin keeps breaking out, and then use other products again etc. All in all, I do like this product but towards the end, I felt like it didn’t work as well as before. I wonder if it’s because my skin got used to it or it was because it got ‘old’.

4) Skinfood – Facial Water Vita-C

why did I buy it?  I was in Seoul and went a little skincare crazy at that time hurhur.

first impressions? moisturizes really well! gel moisturizers are my favorite kind of moisturizers.

upon finishing? Besides moisturizing really well, I felt that it didn’t do anything much. Also do not like the fact that it was in a container but it does seem like most moisturizers are packaged this way, sigh. One thing I must say though, I really enjoy using this on the plane so I would definitely repurchase it if my skin gets drier (now, it’s combination).

5) Giorgio Armani – Armani Code (75mL)

why did I buy it? I am kind of a perfume freak so I love having different scents.

first impressions? I LOVE IT! Not too light, not too heavy, not too flowery, not too fruity. Lasts pretty well for me, but I never seem to have a problem with the lasting powers of perfumes.

upon finishing? Despite me having over ten perfumes to choose from, this is the one I wear most frequently. I have another bottle, and although I don’t use it as often now, I still love it very much 🙂

6) Estee Lauder – Double Wear Foundation (2W1 Sand 36, 30mL)

why did I buy it? I needed a heavy coverage foundation as I was breaking out badly at a time and didn’t have much confidence.

first impressions? covers really well, stayed on for a long time, control oil well too, and matches my skin perfectly!

upon finishing? towards the end, I find it too heavy because thankfully, my skin is in better condition now. I use it either as a concealer or mix it with a light bb cream for a sheerer coverage.

7) Maybelline – Babylips in Energizing Orange

why did I buy it? Got this in a goodie bag when I attended a Maybelline event previously.

first impressions? I thought I wouldn’t like this scent but I actually enjoyed it!

upon finishing? This is my second babylips and I love this product so much that I have gone out and bought 2 more when I was in LA. They are available in Singapore of course.

And that’s all this month! I have nothing exciting planned this month but am still looking forward to spend the holidays with T. Even if it is just chilling at home 🙂
